Frequent wear and tear from friction with your golf glove can necessitate replacing the grips, which are long, rubberized tools that fit over your club shaft to provide traction when you hold the club. Not all golf grips are created equal. Grips should be sized according to your hands to ensure the grip covers enough of your club. Grips also come in different thicknesses and patterns. It's best to hold the grips while wearing your golf glove to simulate how the grip will feel when in use. Once you have picked the right one, you are ready to replace your grips.
Step 1
Use your utility knife to make a cut down the center of the existing grip for removal. If possible, use a knife that has a hook blade to avoid damaging the club. Start at the bottom of the club and cut away from your body to avoid injury.
Step 2
Slide the grip off the golf club. If you have cut it correctly, it should pull off with ease. You may wish to apply tape-remover spray to remove leftover glue or tape from your previous grips.
Step 3
Wiggle each rubber vise pad in your vise to ensure they are properly in place. Secure vise pads are necessary to prevent damaging the club shaft and should always be checked before removing the existing golf glove grip.
Step 4
Place the club in your vise to where the club head points up. Slowly and gently tighten the vise until the club is stable and secure.
Step 5
Measure a length of tape against your new golf glove grip. Cut the tape to match the length and peel off one side of tape. Place this side on your golf club shaft, letting a small amount hang off the edge. Peel off the other side of the tape and wrap the tape around the club. This will be slightly shorter than the grip itself.
Step 6
Spray grip solvent over the tape. Apply liberally over the entire area to increase stickiness. You also should spray the solvent into the grip itself. Use your finger to plug one end of the grip and spray the solvent into the opposite end. When finished, invert the grip so the excess solvent can drip out.
Step 7
Slide the grip onto the club slowly. Always check before putting it on to ensure you are using the correct side first. Continue sliding the grip down until the grip's cap is securely on the club. Allow plenty of time for the solvent and tape to set in securely. This can take one to two days.
Tips and Warnings
- Always check the way you have slid the grip on to ensure the graphics or logos on the grip are properly aligned. This is important if you use your grips to line up your glove positioning.
