When you walk into a gym or fitness center, you might be overwhelmed by the number of different exercise machines, including treadmills, elliptical machines and stair-steppers, as well as the free weights and weightlifting machines. While it would be difficult to put all of these machines in your home, some planning and thinking can lead you to a machine that you will use and can afford.
Space
The first thing to consider before buying gym equipment is knowing where you will store it. Free weights or machines that fold up and slide under the bed can be practical, but you are going to want to have enough open area for machines such as a treadmill or weight bench. Take measurements and account for moving parts as well as the need to get to all sides of the machine for potential cleaning, repairs and adjustments.
Use and Need
It doesn't make any sense to invest in exercise equipment that you are not going to use. On the other hand, it is worth investing in a quality machine if you use it routinely. If you have a good idea of how you work-out, for example if you know you like to mix cardio workouts with free weight lifting, you will have a better idea of what machine will work best for you. Sometimes the simpler the equipment the better, as some types of equipment require high levels of conditioning or coordination. The equipment that you purchase should fit the goals that you want to achieve, whether it is strength, flexibility or endurance.
Price
If you are serious about exercising, you will want to avoid the cheaply constructed, low-quality products. You will also want to weigh the cost of the exercise equipment against what you might already be paying for at your local gym, fitness center or health club. If you can balance that cost against gym memberships, plus gas and time to get to the gym, you can often find something in the right price range. Know what features you want and consider warranties on whatever piece of equipment you purchase.
Other Considerations
When purchasing gym equipment, avoid being enamored with the high end accessories that can hike the price, while at the same time looking for safety features and warranties that accompany your purchase. Because gym equipment can be extremely expensive, spend time researching and perhaps even testing out the equipment you are interested in.
