Tandem bicycles have multiple seats, allowing several riders to bike simultaneously. Typically, there are just two positions, but some models allow for more. Always wear a helmet when you're riding a bicycle. If you are new to tandem bicycles, elbow pads and wrist guards might also be wise.

Why Ride a Tandem Bicycle?

Tandem bicycles provide people the opportunity to exercise together. Of course, you could ride single person bicycles along the same path or road, but the teamwork that tandem bicycling requires allows people to work together to achieve fitness goals rather than compete or perform alone. Also, tandem bicycles work well for people who have physical disabilities, such as visual impairment, because only one rider needs to steer and look out for traffic.

Who Gets to Ride in Front?

Manufacturers of tandem bicycles design them to work best when the heavier person is in the front position. This improves the handling because the heaviest weight is not over the rear tire. Also, the frames of some tandem bicycles require the person in the front position to be taller than the person in the rear. Some people assume that the conventional arrangement of men in front and women in back is sexist, but it is only popular because men typically are taller and weigh more than women. Whoever weighs more or is taller should ride in the front, regardless of gender. Check with the specifications of your particular model to determine the best seating arrangement.

What Does Each Person Do?

The captain is the person in the front position. The responsibility of the captain is to steer, shift and brake the bike, as well as to pedal. The main responsibility of the rear position, or stoker, is to pedal. Lesser responsibilities include accessing energy bars or drinks and notifying the captain of any unnoticed traffic or obstacles. Because the mechanism of a tandem bike requires simultaneous pedaling, both people should pedal constantly. Though it is possible to buy a model that only requires one person to pedal at a time, these types of bikes require special equipment and may be more expensive.

How Do I Choose a Tandem Bike?

Some tandem bikes work best for road racing, others for mountainous paths and off-road riding. If you are not experienced, it is best to consult an expert user or the staff at a local bike shop. Ask for recommendations of some tandem bike manufacturers. Let the staff know where you plan to ride your tandem bike and ask which options are important to have. For example, if you plan to ride on dirt paths, you will need thick tires that provide plenty of traction. Some bike shops rent tandem bicycles, giving you a chance to test different models. If not, at least take your potential purchase for a short ride to ensure it works for you and your partner.
