Fast food diets can be high in fat, salt and sugar and low in fiber. But you can make healthy choices at fast food restaurants. If you have a favorite fast food restaurant, check out their website for nutrition information on their entrees and side dishes. Some restaurants post this information in the stores, while others have pamphlets they'll provide upon request. Studying these guides can help you make smart fast food choices.

Step 1

Opt for smaller sized entrees. Choose a single instead of a double burger. Don't "supersize" your meal. Some chains will even allow you to order a children's meal, which will have smaller portions and thus a lower calorie count. Select grilled or baked meats instead of fried. If a smaller size of the food your want isn't available, split the entree with someone else, or immediately divide the meal in half and wrap half for later.

Step 2

Request that your entree be served without dressing, mayonnaise or special sauce. Ask for low- fat salad dressing and mustard. Skip extras such as cheese or bacon, which add calories and fat.

Step 3

Pick salads, fruits and vegetables other than french fries for your side dishes. Order the salads with low-fat dressing on the side. Remove extra croutons and cheese from salads. Ask for extra vegetables on burgers to increase both the fiber and nutrition of your meal. Select whole grain breads and buns when available.

Step 4

Drink low fat milk or water instead of soft drinks or milk shakes. Milk provides calcium, vitamin D and protein.
