Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It's characterized by wear and tear of the cartilage, the spongy substance located between the joints. As the cartilage is worn away over time, the bones eventually rub against one another. This causes pain, stiffness and inflammation. Homeopathic remedies may relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis, but they can't cure it. Homeopathy works by initiating a response to an outside stimulus, which triggers the body to heal itself. Consult your health practitioner before starting any new treatment for arthritis, especially because homeopathic remedies are largely untested by the Food and Drug Administration.

Arnica

Arnica is used primarily to reduce pain, swelling and bruising and for both chronic and acute conditions. The remedy is indicated when there is a sensation of deep and painful aching and you don't want to be touched or want the painful joint touched,, writes homeopath William Boericke, M.D., in the "Materia Medica and Repertory." Additionally, you may need Arnica if there is bruising and discoloration of the skin with swelling, and generalized soreness. If the arthritis is widespread, you may feel your bed is too hard, making his arthritis feel even worse. Arnica is available as an oral remedy and in lotions and creams for topical application. Never use topical Arnica on an open wound.

Rhus Toxicdrndron

Rhus toxicadendron, or Rhus tox, is indicated for arthritis characterized by pain and stiffness that's worsened when you start to move the affected area, says Boericke. After the initial movement, the stiffness recedes and movement becomes easier and less painful. Rhus tox may also help in cases in which arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions exist in the same person, causing inflammation and pain. The remedy may help when you have redness, swelling and inflammation and in chronic cases of osteoarthritis after other treatments have failed, writes "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines." If you need this remedy, you often feel chilly and prefer warm applications or a warm bath, which makes the arthritis feel better. You feel worse in wet, damp weather and may appear restless, always changing position to try to get comfortable.

Bryonia Alba

Bryonia alba, or Bryonia, is indicated for cases of osteoarthritis in which the pain is excruciating and worsened by even the smallest movement of the joint, according to Frans Vermeulen in the "Synoptic Materia Medica." Tearing pains can make you cry out, and the joint may be red, swollen and extremely tender to the touch. You may be thirsty for large amounts of very cold water and may prefer being left alone during an acute attack.

Other Considerations

Always consult a health practitioner before using homeopathic remedies to be sure they are the best treatment. Remedies are available over the counter in health food stores and online. Ask your practitioner for guidelines for proper dosing.
