Since the time of the ancient Egyptians, women have used facial masks to remove dead skin cells and to refresh their skin tone. Back then, clay or mud were the only options. Today things are a little different. Facial masks are great for unclogging the pores, tightening the structure of the skin and giving you a feeling of rejuvenation. They also help to replace depleted moisture levels. There are many different types of facial mask with a range of beneficial ingredients suitable for different skin types.
Facial masks can come in powdered form to which you add water and make a paste. With this type of mask you apply the paste and as it dries it extracts impurities from your skin and absorbs excess oils. When the mask is dry you simply rinse it away with warm water and it leaves your face fresh and revitalized. Other facial masks come in the form of a gel which you apply to your
skin and leave for 5 to 10 minutes. Gel masks dry fast, and once you are finished you can easily peel the mask from your face starting at your chin and rolling upwards, rather like removing a second skin.
Some facial masks contain a clay base such as kaolin or fullers earth. These ingredients help to remove dirt from your pores and exfoliate dead skin cells. Whatever type of mask you use, to obtain the full benefits, apply it after a facial steam to open your pores, and remove it after the specified time.
What to Look for
If you have oily skin, you should look for a clay-based facial mask, as these will help to extract excess oil from your skin without leaving it too dry. If you suffer from dry skin, you will feel the benefits of a gentler peeling mask such as one containing oatmeal, peach or bran. Also look for masks that have other beneficial ingredients that will soften and tone your skin, like vitamin E, aloe and antioxidants.
Common Pitfalls
Some facial masks contain tea tree oil. If you have sensitive skin, this could cause redness and a mild burning sensation. If you are prone to oily or combination skin, you will want to find a light cleansing mask. Some heavier masks can leave behind an oily film designed to keep in moisture. While this is good for dry skin, it may have an adverse effect on oily skin.
