Whether upgrading the stock pedals that come with a bike to clipless pedals, replacing damaged or worn pedals, or performing other maintenance on the crank set or bearings, you need to first remove the old pedals. When removing the pedals, remember that the right pedal is threaded clockwise to tighten it into the crank, while the left pedal has a counter-clockwise thread. Understanding this allows you to reverse the direction you turn each pedal axle to loosen it. Removing both pedals takes about 15 minutes to complete with simple bicycle tools.

Step 1

Place your bike securely in a bicycle repair stand.

Step 2

Place the 15 mm pedal wrench on the flats of the right pedal axle between the pedal and the crank arm.

Step 3

Grasp the crank arm to hold it still. Rotate the wrench counter-clockwise to unscrew the thread on the pedal axle from the crank arm. Continue rotating the axle until it comes completely free from the crank arm.

Step 4

Place the pedal wrench on the flats of the left pedal axle between the pedal and the crank arm.

Step 5

Grasp the crank arm. Rotate the wrench clockwise to unscrew the pedal axle thread until it comes completely free from the crank arm.

Step 6

Apply a thin layer of axle grease to the axle thread on the pedals before reinstalling them of installing new pedals.
