The fastest BMX bikes feature components that help to cut down on the overall weight. According to BMX Bike Reviews, some of the fastest BMX bikes have been designed for downhill racing. While street bikes often feature a bulky steel frame, BMX companies design the fastest bikes with an alloy material.

Frame

The frame remains the largest and heaviest component of the BMX bike. The fastest BMX bikes feature a durable frame with hollow tubes. According to ESPN, the KHE company offers one of the lightest and fastest BMX bikes on the market. The KHE company uses titanium in the construction of the BMX frame. The complete bike weighs in at just over 16 lb. Top-of-the-line BMX bikes used for racing often have an aluminum or chromoly frame.

Handlebar Stem

The stem refers to the component that holds the handlebars in place. While the handlebar stem features a compact design, it can weigh down your BMX bike. According to BMX Plus Magazine, the fastest BMX bikes feature a handlebar stem with hollow bolts. The hollow design helps to decrease the weight of your bike while increasing your speed capabilities. The fastest BMX bikes have a handlebar stem made from forged aluminum. High end handlebar stems weigh less than 10 oz.

Wheels

Conventional BMX bikes used in street and park riding commonly feature wide rims made from stainless steel. BMX racing bikes have a slimmed down wheel made from alloy that offers decreased wind resistance. The front and back wheel axle often have a solid aluminum construction. To increase the speed of the bike, BMX companies manufacture hollow wheel axles. Some BMX racers actually cut off the ends of the axles to further decrease the weight of the bike.

Pedals

Heavy pedals will hinder your ability to push the crank arms forward. The fastest BMX bikes feature hollow pedals. Inexpensive racing pedals have been designed out of recycled plastic. BMX companies manufacture top-of-the-line racing pedals with a titanium or magnesium body. The pedals on the fastest BMX racing bikes also have hollow bolts. Racing bikes often have a narrow pedal compared to conventional BMX models. High end racing pedals can weigh less than 6 oz.
