How to Become a USA Certified Youth Rugby Coach

Rugby is one of the fastest growing and most popular sports world wide. Rugby is especially popular in England, Australia and smaller European nations. Recently, the sport has begun expanding to the U.S. and had been met with great interest. Any rugby coach should look to become certified by USA Rugby, the governing body for the sport in the U.S. Obtaining this certificating gives the individual a chance to advance through the ranks of coaching and provide individual instruction.

Step 1

Apply for membership with USA Rugby. This certifies you know the basic rules and regulations of the sport. A membership costs $5 to $35, as of January 2011, depending on level of coaching and years of experience within the sport. The membership application can be found at USARugby.org.

Step 2

Take the Rugby Ready online course. You must register first, as this course was developed by international governing bodies to provide common instruction, a basic understanding of rugby rules and new practice ideas as well as a forum for collaboration and discussion. Registration is free and grants access to the entire Rugby Ready website.

Step 3

Pass the Rugby Ready tests. The 12 parts test a variety of rugby disciplines, including rules of the game, history of the sport, development overseas and coaching techniques.

Step 4

Enroll in a course called "Coaching for Winning And Life Lessons." This course is offered by Positive Coaching and is required for youth certification from USA Rugby. The cost is $30, as of January 2011, but several discounts are available. You might check to see if your local coaches association provides reimbursement.

Step 5

Attend a sanctioned Coach Development Program offered by USA Rugby. These seminars run year-round and cost $180 to $200, as of January 2011. The programs are two days and cover a variety of rugby coaching topics.

Step 6

Obtain your certificate. After completing these five courses, you will be certified to coach under USA Rugby.
