Sangria is a delicious alcoholic beverage that consists of wine, liquor and fresh fruit. Original recipes from Spain also included brandy as one of the ingredients. Use your favorite wine and fruits to make a variation of sangria that suits your tastes.

Sangria Ingredients

Sangria is traditionally made with red wine, but you can make white wine variations, as well. Start with your favorite bottle of wine. It can be sweet or dry. Add in a blend of flavored liquors including cherry brandy, apple liqueur, raspberry vodka or peach liqueur. Cut up seasonal fresh fruits: Diced pineapple, cherries, orange slices, lime wedges, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries enhance the flavor. Soak the fruit in the alcohol blend and allow it to sit in the refrigerator for a day before you serve it. This will allow all of the flavors to thoroughly blend. When you are ready to serve your sangria, top it off with ginger ale, lemon-lime soda or soda water.

Calories

Calories in sangria vary based on the types of alcohol you use. A 5-oz. serving can have around 100 to 120 calories. If you consume the fruit from the sangria, your caloric intake will increase. Calories in sangria come from sugars, a type of carbohydrate.

Carbohydrates

Around 45 to 65 percent of your daily calories should come from carbohydrates. They are the main energy source for all of your body's functions. Each gram of carbohydrate has four calories. If you follow a 2,000-calorie diet, you can have 225 to 325 g of carbs every day. This is equivalent to 900 to 1,300 calories from carbohydrates.

Other Nutrients

Sangria provides a few additional nutrients. Consuming the fruit in sangria provides some fiber. Fruits have soluble fiber, which dissolves in the water in your body. Having soluble fiber in your diet may help improve your cholesterol and stabilize your blood sugar level. You can get 1 to 2 g of fiber from the fruit. Women need 25 g of fiber daily, while men need as much as 38 g. A 5-oz. serving of sangria contains around 110 mg of potassium. Your body uses this mineral for the proper functioning of cells, tissues and organs. You need 2,000 mg of potassium each day. The same size serving of sangria also has about .5 mg of iron. This mineral transports oxygen throughout your body. Men need 8 mg of iron daily, but women need as much as 18 mg.
