If you're hungry and there's still hours until dinnertime, it may be tempting to reach for a bag of chips. But if you're not paying attention, the entire bag may be gone. Instead of binging between meals and regretting it, make a few healthy snacks that you can keep in the refrigerator. The next time you're hungry, enjoy a low-calorie, protein filled snack that will keep you energized without spoiling your dinner.

Celery With Peanut Butter

If you're looking for a light snack that keeps you satisfied but doesn't make you too full for dinner, spread some peanut butter on a few celery sticks. Celery has a high water content, so it will keep you feeling full, while peanut butter is high in protein, which will help stabilize your blood sugar. If you're in the mood for a sweeter treat, sprinkle raisins on top of the peanut butter for a delicious snack that also satisfies your sweet tooth.

Carrots and Hummus

You could dip carrots in dip, but most store-bought dips are high in saturated fat, calories and sugar. Opt instead for hummus, a dip made from blended chickpeas and spices, that is low in saturated fat but high in protein. The protein-filled dip will satisfy your hunger without having to cheat on your diet. If you're not a hummus fan, mash up an avocado and dip your carrots in guacamole for a flavorful snack.

Dried Fruit and Nuts

When you're snacking on the go, pack a handful of dried fruit, like raisins, cranberries or apples and a handful of nuts, like walnuts or almonds into a plastic container. Munch on the homemade trail mix whenever you feel hunger pangs. Nuts are high in protein so they will help keep you from crashing in the afternoon. Dried fruit may provide a temporary energy boost, but eat it sparingly -- dried fruit has more calories than fresh fruit.

Cottage Cheese and Berries

If you're craving something sweet, add a handful of berries, like blueberries, cherries, strawberries or blackberries, into a cup of low-fat cottage cheese. Cottage cheese is high in protein and calcium, which will keep you energized throughout the day. Berries are high in antioxidants and fiber, which may help your body run efficiently as you continue your busy day. If you don't have fresh berries on hand, frozen berries are just as delicious.
