Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, which is a small pouch attached to the beginning of your large intestine. In most cases, an appendectomy will be required to cure the appendicitis. Appendectomies are common and, according to MedlinePlus, are the most common causes of emergency abdominal surgery in the United States. Because most appendectomies are done as soon as possible you may not have time to prepare. In the event that you do, you should make dietary changes to reduce the risk of surgical complications.
Step 1
Avoid eating at least six hours before your surgery if possible. Eating will not only aggravate your symptoms of appendicitis, but can also increase your risk for complications during surgery. Specifically, you will need to be placed on a ventilator during your surgery. If you have recently eaten food, the anesthesia may cause you to vomit and inhale stomach contents, which can lead to a serious infection.
Step 2
Avoid drinking fluids at least six hours before your surgery. Similar to food, you can also vomit recently ingested beverages, which can increase your risk for serious post-surgical complications. You should not worry about dehydration because the anesthesiologist will start an intravenous line that will provide fluids to your body to prevent dehydration.
Step 3
Eat ice chips occasionally if you have dry mouth or a strong urge to eat. Occasional consumption of ice chips will not increase your risk for surgical complications and will help reduce your cravings for water and food.
Tips and Warnings
- Ask your doctor if you should continue taking your medications prior to your appendectomy.
