Personal training can be a satisfying business and career, but it is also competitive. The growing number of people who are overweight, aging or suffering from medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes has helped the fitness industry expand and become more lucrative. That means more personal trainers are vying for clients, increasing the need for you to effectively promote your services.
Step 1
Determine what makes you different from the many other trainers out there. Every business needs branding and identity; find ways to differentiate yourself from the pack. All personal trainers should be able to help someone get into shape, but think about why someone should work out with you rather than anyone else.
Step 2
Create promotional materials. Design a website and corresponding postcards, fliers and business cards. Keep the look and feel of the design clean and simple, and use clear, concise wording that describes who you are, your services and abilities. Clearly list contact information so that people can easily email or call you with questions.
Step 3
Pass out your promotional materials at health food stores, vitamin and supplement shops, sporting events or even along a popular jogging trail. Go to where people who like to work out go and let them know about your services.
Step 4
Ask your current clients for referrals. Satisfied clients are one of the most effective means of promotion; offer your current clients a discount in exchange for a successful referral.
Step 5
Offer a free trial session to potential clients. Showing is much more effective than telling; with a free session, you can show would-be clients your ability and professionalism while they are able to get firsthand experience on exactly what you will be able to do for them.
Step 6
Schedule speaking engagements with athletic-oriented groups, such as running clubs, tennis tournaments and soccer games to promote your personal training services. Weekend warriors and amateur athletes are often looking for ways to improve their ability in their particular sport; making a guest appearance, of sorts, with a running club can allow you to explain how strength training can improve their fitness level and help them complete a marathon.
Step 7
Work out in the gym where you train. Allowing people to see that you practice what you preach and that you are able to work out your own body in a safe, effective manner will lend to your credibility. Additionally, it will allow you to be accessible to members in a casual way, giving them the opportunity to speak with and get to know you.
