HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that attacks a type of white blood cells referred to as T-lymphocytes. This can lead to the onset of AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. AIDS is a serious disease that affects your immune system. Symptoms of HIV include fever, diarrhea, headache, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, mouth ulcers, joint aches, muscle pains, nausea and vomiting. Certain herbs may be helpful in relieving or managing the symptoms of HIV. Always consult your doctor before taking any herbs and never use herbal remedies to replace other forms of treatment.

Bitter Melon

Bitter melon, also known as Mornordica charantia, may be helpful in strengthening and supporting your body's systems so that you can relieve and control symptoms of HIV and AIDS. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that a standard extract of 200 mg, at two to three times per day, may offer antiviral benefits and immune support. You may need a stronger dose in order to benefit symptoms of HIV and AIDS. UMMC advises that a health care professional can advise you on appropriate dosage. By boosting your immune system, this herb may help you be better able to fight further infections or ongoing symptoms.

Maitake Mushroom

Maitake mushroom, also known as Grifola frondosa, is another herb that may play a beneficial role in managing HIV symptoms. UMMC recommends that a standardized extract of 600 mg, two times per day, can offer you immunity and antiviral effects. Therefore, this herb may help strengthen your body's defenses against illness, infection and harmful viral agents. This herb can also be taken as a tincture at a dosage of 30 to 60 drops, for two to three times per day, according to UMMC.

Green Tea

Green tea is a readily available herb that may be helpful if you have HIV. This tea can offer antioxidant and immune benefits. Antioxidants are compounds that help your body fight against free radical compounds, harmful bacteria, and viruses that can cause infection and illness in your body. This protects you from developing further infections and strengthens your body to better fight your current illness. Specifically, green tea contains a substance called epiogallocatechin gallate, which has indicated an inhibition of HIV infection in some research, notes UMMC. A standard extract of 250 to 500 mg daily may be helpful. In addition, you can make daily teas that come from the leaf of the herb.

Cat's Claw

Cat's claw is another herb that may be beneficial if you have HIV. This herb has been traditionally used by South Americans to treat conditions such as stomach ulcers, fevers, arthritis and inflammation. This herb is also referred to as Uncaria tomentosa and may offer your body increased immunity and protection from harmful viruses. UMMC advises that a standard extract of 20 mg, three times per day, may be helpful. However, research studies are ongoing to determine if cat's claw can provide benefit for those with HIV. Further research studies are required to establish any benefits.
