Acid reflux can happen to adults and children. MedlinePlus states that acid reflux occurs when digestive juices in your stomach leak from your stomach into your esophagus, causing a burning sensation or discomfort in your chest. In some cases, stomach fluid may be tasted in the back of your mouth. Acid reflux may respond to herbal medicine, but you should always ask your physician about the treatment options that are safest for you before taking herbs.

Acid Reflux

Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, is often accompanied by bloating, gas, breathing difficulties, stomach pain and nausea. Acid reflux is common in people with hiatal hernia, although this condition can also be induced by consuming certain foods, such as chocolate, citrus fruit and tomato-based foods. Alcohol and caffeine are also substances that may trigger your acid reflux. When acid reflux occurs on a regular basis, this condition is called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

Herbal Medicine

Herbs for acid reflux contain active constituents that help soothe and heal your gastrointestinal tract, keep your stomach contents from refluxing into your esophagus and help treat your esophageal ulcers. Certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," states that aloe vera juice and chamomile tea help treat esophageal irritation. Other helpful herbs for acid reflux include deglycyrrhizinated licorice, fennel, echinacea, ginger, papaya, catnip, geranium, slippery elm, marshmallow root, turmeric and goldenseal.

An Effective Herb

Papaya may be an effective herb in treating your acid reflux. Papaya, Balch states, stimulates your appetite and improves your digestion. Papaya is often used to treat heartburn, indigestion and inflammatory bowel disorders. Papaya contains several important nutrients, such as zinc, iron, calcium and vitamins B-1, B-2, B-3, B-5 and C. Papaya also contains the phytochemical papain, which is an enzyme known for its ability to break down meat. The fruit and leaves of the papaya plant are used in herbal preparations.

Additional Information

If you suffer from acid reflux, it is important that you avoid eating caffeine-containing foods and acidic foods, such as citrus fruits and juices. Overeating during meals and carrying too much weight may also contribute to your acid reflux. If you experience feelings of anger or stress on a regular basis, consider visiting a qualified health care professional to address these problems. Decreased anger and stress may help reduce the frequency and intensity of your acid reflux.
