Strong, sexy ab muscles have created a need for effective abdominal workout machines. With so many available on the market, it is unnecessary to lie on the floor to do old-fashioned crunches and sit-ups. You cannot spot train to reduce abdominal fat specifically, but you can use reliable machines to tone and strengthen your external oblique muscles.

Captain's Chair

Most gyms have at least one captain's chair to tone the lower abs. It is set up high to where you have to step up to it, and contains a padded back and arm rests. Place your feet in the footholds, hold both handles and plant your back against the backrest. Your legs should dangle underneath you. Exercise your abs by pulling your knees up to your chest and releasing them back to the starting position.

Torso Twist

The torso twist machine works your obliques, or the sides of your stomach. Sit on the bench, press your chest against the pads and grasp both handles. Set the desired amount of weight and shift from the center to the right side and back to center. Do this for the prescribed number of reps. Switch to your left side and repeat for the same number of reps.

Crunch Machine

The crunch machine simulates doing classic crunches, only you lie on a bench and you have better head, neck and back support. Lie on the bench, prop your feet on the footrests and grab the handles. Squeeze your abs and push forward with your hands, lifting your shoulders up. Hold for a second then release back to starting position.

Rowing Machine

The rowing machine is unique in that it works your abs while giving you a cardio workout. Sit on the rower and secure your feet in the footholds. Set the lever to your desired level of resistance. Grab the bar with both hands and pull toward your chest, while pushing your legs back, straight. Pull your legs back inward while pushing the bar inward as well. Repeat this exercise for the prescribed amount of time.
