Becoming an EMT in Utah is a multi-step process that includes several courses, forms, applications and background checks. The Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services controls EMS and paramedic certification and training in Utah. Utah uses the EMT B National Standard Curriculum and coordinates all of the basic, intermediate and intermediate advanced EMT courses, as well as course coordinator seminars and instructor training.
Step 1
Enroll in a Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services approved certification course. The UBEMS has an online search and registration tool for approved courses.
Step 2
Complete the following courses prior to submitting your application: CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals.
Step 3
Complete the following forms, available from the UBEMS website: Application for Certification; Recertification and Reciprocity; Student Acknowledgement of Bureau Policies and Procedures; Declaration of Understanding of Technical, Academic and Physical Standards.

Submit to a criminal background check. If you are new to Utah, or have lived outside the state within the last five years, you will also need to submit fingerprints.
Step 7
Complete the EMT Certification courses that you signed up for in step one.
Step 8
Take the practical and written certification exam, administered by the UBEMS, after completing your courses.
