Flaxseed is a nutritional supplement derived from the Linum usitatissimum plant. This omega-3 fatty acid-rich seed has been purported to treat a number of health problems, including constipation, eczema and arthritis. However, certain people may develop a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis after taking flaxseed. If you develop any of the symptoms of an allergic reaction to flaxseed, seek emergency medical care.
Skin Rash or Hives
You may develop red, irritated, swollen patches of skin across your body after consuming flaxseed as a sign of an allergy to form of fiber. The skin welts or hives may itch intensely or may be sensitive to the touch. Your skin may also appear unusually pale or flushed or may be warm to the touch. These skin lesions may appear across any region of your body and may range in severity from mild to severe.
Stomach Irritation
If you are allergic to flaxseed, you may experience stomach irritation after consuming this supplement. Stomach-related symptoms associated with anaphylaxis include nausea, vomiting, sudden diarrhea or abdominal cramping or pain. Typically, such symptoms come on within a few minutes of consuming the allergen, though symptoms may take longer than 30 minutes to arise, MayoClinic.com warns.
Difficulty Breathing
Swelling along your throat caused by an allergy to flaxseed may result in breathing or swallowing difficulties. You may experience sudden shortness of breath or wheezing. Your nasal passageways may become congested with excess mucus, making it difficult to breathe through your nostrils. Trouble breathing may limit the amount of oxygen that reaches your lungs, which may also cause symptoms of dizziness or loss of consciousness.
Heart Rate Changes
Anaphylaxis caused by flaxseed consumption may cause a dramatic drop in your blood pressure, which may cause heart rate changes, such as palpitations. Heart rate changes may also cause chest pain or tightness, upper body discomfort or breathing problems. In the absence of immediate medical care, a sudden decrease in blood pressure may result in shock, which may cause your vital organs to begin malfunctioning.
Anxiety or Confusion
If you experience an allergic reaction to flaxseed, you may develop unusual mood-related changes. You may feel unusually anxious or confused or you may develop a sensation of impending doom. Typically, these signs of anaphylaxis occur in conjunction with other symptoms, such as breathing difficulties, stomach discomfort or heart rate changes.
