Becoming a youth hockey coach is not for everyone but does provide a rewarding experience in molding our future. You must adhere to certain rules and regulations to qualify as a youth hockey coach.
Step 1
Enroll in a coaching program through a nationally recognized and accredited hockey coaching training center. According to the American Hockey Coaches Association, youth coaches are required to complete a training program through the USA Hockey or Hockey Canada organizations. Course length differs depending on experience and level of youth coaching desired.
Step 2
Register your name and credentials with national or regional coaching associations to get your name out there. Registering with these associations will help you find coaching positions available that meet your level of expertise. Potential employers will also be able to check your credentials during the application process.
Step 3
Read information on local youth hockey rules and regulations, making sure that you become increasingly familiar with this information. Youth hockey information varies from state to state, therefore pinpointing where you plan to coach and knowing specific rules will give you the best possible start to successful coaching.
Step 4
Contact area schools, youth organizations and recreational sporting organizations for job openings in youth hockey. Although not always advertised, cold calling may open up several job opportunities that you may not have been aware of otherwise. Submitting your resume to several potential employers will increase your chances of starting a rewarding coaching position.
