Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is a disease of the joints where the body's immune system attacks both bone and cartilage, causing joint damage and debility. It is considered incurable; however, certain alternative therapies such as herbal medicine may provide relief from symptoms and help prevent the progression of the disease. Herbs can cause side effects, so always visit your health practitioner first before trying new herbal treatments for serious diseases like RA.
Ginger
Ginger has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine for centuries not only as a spice, but also to reduce inflammation and pain associated with joint disease. For medicinal benefits, ginger is best consumed as a tea or in supplement form; however, using ginger as a condiment or spice is another way to add this anti-inflammatory herb to your regimen. Ginger can thin the blood, so if you take blood-thinners, consult your health practitioner before using it medicinally.
Ashwaganda
Primarily used in Ayurvedic medicine, ashwaganda, or Indian ginseng, is used for the treatment of various arthritic conditions and carpal tunnel syndrome. Ashwaganda is high in a naturally occurring steroid-like compound whose properties mimic the effects of hydrocortisone, reducing pain and inflammation of the joints. The herb may be especially helpful for the treatment of autoimmune diseases characterized by swelling, inflammation, pain and stiffness such as lupus and RA. Speak with your health practitioner or an Ayurvedic medical doctor for details on dosing and use for ashwaganda.
Turmeric
Turmeric is another herb with multiple uses both in cooking and medicinally. Widely used by Ayurvedic and Eastern herbal practitioners, turmeric is heralded as an anti-inflammatory of great value. Research indicates its promise for relieving all forms of inflammation in joint and musculoskeletal diseases, as well as in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and lupus. Additionally, turmeric appears to offer superior relief for inflammation and pain after surgery. Turmeric can thin the blood, so consult your health practitioner if you take blood-thinning medicines before using it.
Boswellia serrata
Boswellia serrata is a traditional herb used in India, China and the West for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It is used as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. A recommended dose is between 400mg to 800mg daily; however, it is best to consult your health practitioner for dosing directions based on your individual needs.
