Summer snacks can help you maintain energy during a hot day. Many snacks are easy to prepare ahead of time, so you can grab them on the way out the door for your daily activities. Healthy snacks do not take long to prepare. They help you avoid the impulse eating of chips, fries, candy and other unhealthy snacks. Take some time in the evening to prepare nutritious snacks for the next day.

Fruit

Fresh fruit, dried fruit and canned fruit are healthy summer snacks. Eating a wide variety of fruits regularly will help your body maintain a healthy level of vitamins. Many fruits contain vitamin C. Rinse off the canned fruit before serving to remove any syrup added during canning. Fresh fruits like oranges, bananas, apples, kiwi, grapefruit and pears are easy to transport for an on-the-go snack.

Vegetables

Small bags of chopped vegetables are a nutritious summer snack. Cut and store the vegetables yourself. Commercially prepared cut vegetables may have added unhealthy preservatives or chemicals to keep them fresh longer. Vegetables that are great for a healthy, easy to transport snack include broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery and peppers.

Trail Mix

Trail mix is an easy to make summer snack. Trail mix ingredients can include raisins, peanuts, small pretzels and dry cereal. You may wish to add other ingredients, such as flaked coconut and chopped dried fruits like prunes, apricots or pineapple. This snack is easy to adapt for each member of your family, depending on their food preferences.

Cheese

String cheese is a nutritious summer snack that is easy to transport. String cheese contains calcium, which keeps your bones strong. If it's very hot, keep the string cheese in a cool place or add an ice pack when you're on the go.

Nuts

Nuts are a summer snack that contain antioxidants, which help to prevent cancer. A bag or container of nuts is easy to transport and will stay fresh even in hot environments like the beach. Nuts to consider for snacks include Brazil nuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews and macadamia nuts. Ask you doctor for information about when a child is old enough to eat nuts for a snack.
