The challenges that come with an attempt to lose weight can prevent an overweight or obese person from shedding pounds that could increase their risk for serious and life-threatening illnesses such as certain cancers, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Knowing what challenges you may come up against when you try to lose weight can help you prepare for them. Losing weight can be difficult, but determination and a strategy to help you triumph over weight loss challenges should help.
Impatience
Some people become discouraged with losing weight when they do not see fast results. Discouragement can result in abandoning a plan to lose weight. To prevent this from happening to you, make your goal a realistic one, and do not resort to an unhealthy diet of just soup. Starving yourself can make dieting so unpleasant you may not want to pursue it. According to Ramstein Air Base Health and Wellness Center Diet Therapist David Fernandez, losing ½ to 1.5 pounds a week is a realistic goal for you.
Bad Eating Habits
Eating chocolate fudge cookies when you are stressed out may be a hard habit to break. Other eating habits that could be weight loss challenges include eating your food quickly, devouring every morsel of food on your plate, eating because you want to and not because you are hungry, never passing up dessert and missing meals. Develop a plan that will help you avoid these pitfalls and trade in your bad eating habits for good ones.
The Holidays
Holiday dinners often lead to weight gain. For a dieter, dieting during the holidays can be a challenge. To tackle this challenge, have a little something to eat prior to leaving the house for a holiday dinner to prevent overeating later on. Also, tuck a nourishing low calorie snack such as a piece of fruit in your purse, or carry it in a bag so you can eat that instead of a high calorie dessert. If you cannot resist carrot cake, eat a small piece. Take one of your favorite low-calorie dishes with you to avoid eating high calorie dishes. Eat no more than one plate of food. Make water your main beverage, and help with the dishes to burn calories.
Exercising
Some people consider exercising laborious. If you think exercising is all work and no fun, you have come face to face with a weight loss challenge. To help you overcome this challenge, make exercising enjoyable. Engage in physical activities you consider play, not work. Biking is one choice. Tennis is another. There also are dancing and jogging. All of these activities can be done with a friend or family member. If you are very overweight and find it difficult to move, Women's Health recommends engaging in exercises you can do while seated and consulting with your doctor for more ideas and a suitable fitness plan.
