Scurvy is a condition caused by a lack of ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, in your diet. The condition is uncommon in younger Americans, although it is occasionally seen in older Americans suffering from malnourishment. If you have scurvy, you may experience weakness, anemia, gum disease and skin hemorrhages. Certain herbal remedies may be beneficial in treating your scurvy. However, before taking herbs, talk with your doctor about treatment methods that are most appropriate for you.

Identification

Scurvy is rare in Western societies, although it used to be common among sailors. Common signs and symptoms associated with scurvy include poor wound repair, soft and bleeding gums, edema or swelling, tooth loss, extreme weakness and skin lesions. In many cases, signs of scurvy are less intense and include gums that bleed when you brush your teeth, increased frequency of infection, joint pain, reduced energy levels, poor digestion, inability to heal wounds in a timely manner and easy bruising.

Useful Herbal Remedies

Useful herbal remedies for scurvy are remedies that contain vitamin C, of which there are many. According to certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," herbs that contain vitamin C include alfalfa, burdock root, cayenne, chickweed, eyebright, fennel seed, fenugreek, hops, kelp, peppermint, mullein, nettle, oat straw, paprika, parsley, pine needle, plantain, raspberry leaf, red clover, rose hips, skullcap, violet leaves, yarrow and yellow dock. Berries, citrus fruits and green vegetables also contain significant amounts of vitamin C.

Featured Herb

Burdock root is an effective herbal remedy for treating scurvy. It has long been used topically to treat skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. Burdock, states Balch, may also be used to treat gout, menopausal symptoms, boils and carbuncles. Burdock root has antioxidant action and may help protect you from cancer. It also possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties. Burdock root should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Disclaimer

Scurvy is a serious medical condition. Most cases of scurvy are caused by severe malnourishment, which means that other conditions may also be present. A health care professional, especially one who is trained in clinical nutrition or botanical medicine, can assess your condition and make relevant and helpful treatment suggestions. The use of herbal remedies for scurvy is not intended to replace other treatment options recommended by your doctor but is an adjunct therapy that may help speed your recovery and reduce your symptoms.
