Metabolism is the process your body uses to turn food into energy. That energy can be stored or used for activity. One signal that metabolism is not working at peak performance is weight gain. If you are worried about the rate of your toddler's metabolism, speak with your doctor first to rule out any metabolic disorders such as a thyroid problem. Once you receive medical clearance, you can help increase your toddler's metabolism by encouraging more physical activity and by establishing healthy eating habits.

Model Physical Activity

Step 1

Set a good example. Participate in physical activity by taking your family to local swimming pools or going on nature walks. Include your child in activities such as raking the leaves, picking up sticks or sweeping the floor of the house. Participate in your own workout routine to show the value of physical activity.

Step 2

Take your child outside. Teach her games such as hopscotch, hula hoop, ball throwing or jump rope. Pretend to be different animals and mimic the way one walks, like a tiger on all fours, or jumps, like a kangaroo.

Step 3

Limit your child's television time. Replace that time by turning on music and having a dance-a-thon.

Step 4

Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Park farther away from the entrance to a store and hold your toddler's hand as he walks with you instead of setting him in the shopping cart.

Step 5

Schedule physical activities. They could include gymnastics, swim lessons or sport teams.

Teach Healthy Eating

Step 1

Serve a healthy breakfast. Offer your child foods such as oatmeal, eggs or fruit.

Step 2

Offer snacks every two hours. Encourage your child to eat a healthy snack, such as cheese, yogurt, fruits or vegetables.

Step 3

Do not belong to the "clean your plate" club. Allow your child to leave food on his plate. Let your child determine when he is full.

Step 4

Serve protein at every meal. Offer a protein portion, but prepare mostly carbohydrate foods to supply energy for your toddler.

Tips and Warnings

  • Activities for your toddler should revolve around fun. If your child does not enjoy an activity you have chosen, ask him to choose one for both of you.
