Ringworm, also called tinea, is a fungal infection that forms on the skin. There are several types of ringworm that appear on different areas of the body. The fungus forms a ring-shaped rash, giving the infection its name.
Appearance
Ringworm appears as a red, scaly, circular rash with healthy skin in the middle and itches severely. Infected skin between the toes, in the groin and on the scalp appears as a dry, red rash and a loss of hair may occur at the site.
Location
Tinea infections may occur on any part of the body, including the scalp, feet and groin. The fungal infections in the groin are called jock itch, and infections of the feet are referred to as athlete's foot.
Cause
Individuals, especially children, acquire ringworm from warm, damp surfaces, such as a locker room. It is also highly contagious and spreads easily between people.
Treatment
Ringworm is treated with antifungal powders, creams and oral medications. Some treatments are available over the counter and others require a prescription.
Prevention
Proper hygiene, avoiding contact with infected individuals and wearing shoes in public showers help prevent possible ringworm infections.
