Both honey and cinnamon have natural therapeutic benefits and are used in aiding weight loss. According to Penn State College of Medicine, honey also has antiseptic and antibacterial properties for external and internal use. Cinnamon has several health benefits, including helping to stabilize blood sugar levels. These two nutritious foods can be consumed together for combined medicinal benefits.
Types of Honey
There are several types of naturally occurring honey with varying general and specific benefits. Penn State College of Medicine says that manuka honey in particular has potent antibacterial properties. The types of honey vary according to the different types of floral pollen used to produce them, which may also cause a variety of colors, flavors and textures. These types of honey may also differ slightly in their nutritional content.
Nutrients in Honey
Honey contains a number of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Most types of honey contain niacin and riboflavin as well as iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. These nutrients provide healing and immune-boosting qualities.
Insulin Effects of Cinnamon
A study published in the "Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics" in September 2010, says that cinnamon helps to increase sensitivity to insulin for improved blood glucose control and to decrease excess insulin production by the pancreas. Cinnamon contains compounds called polyphenols that act as insulin sensitizers and affect glucose absorption and metabolism in the body. This is particularly important for individuals with diabetes. Adding cinnamon to the diet can also help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Antioxidant Effects
Both honey and cinnamon contain potent antioxidants to help cleanse the body of toxins and improve cell repair and disease-fighting abilities. According to the National Institutes of Health, cinnamon has one of the highest antioxidant levels of all spices due to its high levels and quality of polyphenols. A report by the National Honey Board found that the antioxidant and anti-bacterial effects of honey also helped in skin repair and maintenance. Both honey and cinnamon can be combined in teas and desserts for powerful antioxidant medicinal benefits.
