Slim-Fast Programs

The Slim-Fast 3-2-1 plan combines regular food with Slim-Fast diet products to help you lose weight. As you evaluate Slim-Fast, think about whether it has foods that are healthy and that you like to eat, and whether you are likely to be able to stick to the diet to reach your goal weight. Get your doctor's approval before starting any diet.

3-2-1 Background

Slim-Fast is a moderately low-calorie diet, and the 3-2-1 plan provides about 1,200 calories each day from three snacks, two meal replacements, and one balanced meal. Snacks can be Slim-Fast snack bars or 100-calorie portions of regular foods, and each meal replacement can be a Slim-Fast meal bar or shake. Your balanced meal is 500 calories, and the guidelines are to fill about half of your plate with vegetables, 1/4 with lean protein, and 1/4 with a starch.

Slim-Fast Meal Replacements

Twice a day, the Slim-Fast program includes replacing a regular meal with a Slim-Fast meal bar or shake. Bars come in flavors such as chocolate fudge brownie, chocolate cookie dough, and fruit and yogurt trail mix, and shakes come ready to drink or in powders, with flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Each bar or shake provides about 200 calories, and they have at least 20 percent of the daily value for most essential vitamins and minerals. They are also high in dietary fiber.

Individual Considerations

You may be able to modify the Slim-Fast program to meet your individual needs. If you are on a low-carbohydrate diet, Slim-Fast suggests using the lower carb shakes and shake mixes for your meal replacements, and replacing starch with lower-carb vegetables for your balanced meal. Slim-Fast's diet may be a healthy way for you to lose weight if you have diabetes, especially if you are working together with your medical professional. Slim-Fast can also support high-protein or vegetarian diets.

Program Resources

Anyone can sign up for a free online account at Slim-Fast's website, and you can create weight loss goals and track your progress. You can also make friends with other Slim-Fast members or participate in group discussions with other individuals who are following a Slim-Fast program. You can read articles with information about nutrition and Slim-Fast, or submit your more detailed or specific questions to a registered dietitian. An online support system such as Slim-Fast is not a substitute for medical advice from your own health professional.
