New Balance made more than a dozen models of cross trainers in 2010 and 2011. Shoes are made for men and women and stress various factors such as shoe weight, pronation control and cushioning. According to independent reviewers, one shoe, the New Balance 1010, stands out above the rest. This model was chosen at the best men's cross trainer by Workout Result in 2010. It also garnered an excellent review from Running Times. The women's model drew rave reviews as well, placing second in the Fitness Magazine's list of the best cross trainers for women.

Cross Trainers

Cross trainers are celebrated for their versatility. You can wear them to lift weights, play raquetball, move to the beat at an aerobics class and play catch with your kids. You get basic levels of comfort, support, stability and durability in a cross trainer. The best are made of leather or leather and synthetic materials that make the shoes lighter and more breathable.

New Balance 1010

New Balance plays up a number of features of the 1010. It uses a particular rubber compound for maximum outsole durability. It has an extensive web for midfoot support, increased stability and mild pronation control. A patented lace system offers more midfoot support and keeps the shoe snug around the foot. Compared to the previous model, an additional 5 percent to 10 percent more cushioning in the forefoot has been added. A quick-drying liner helps keep your feet dry and comfortable during your workout.

Reviews

Workout Report praised the fit of the 1010, which is designed to eliminate slipping as well as jamming your toes. It lauds the cushioning as well. Running Times says "The 1010 is the most stable shoe we've ever tested. It's not even a close contest." Despite the shoes deliberately rigid design, testers from Running Times found the shoe to be quite comfortable. The high-quality midsole and top-notch cushioning pads also drew praise.

Considerations

The New Balance 2010 retails for about $120 as of January 2011. Athletic shoes from various manufacturers are sometimes sized differently. Also, your feet tend to expand as you get older, so don't assume your foot size is the same as it used to be. Finally, if you are an avid runner, cross trainers are not for you. Compared to running shoes, cross trainers are too heavy for runners who pile up the mileage.
