While on the South Beach Diet, you may feel restricted when you can't eat your favorite treats like ice cream and milk shakes because of their high sugar contents. The sugar in these treats usually comes from the flavored syrups, like chocolate and vanilla. You can fake the flavor of ice cream with a fat-free sherbet. Unlike sorbet, sherbet is still dairy-based, so you'll get the creamy texture, but when made with natural fruit flavors, you can enjoy sherbet within reason as part of your South Beach Diet.
Step 1
Wait until you are through with the induction phase of the Sout hBeach before you attempt to add in sherbet as a treat. Through the induction phase, you're instructed to not eat fruit, so once those first 2 weeks are over, and you've started to add fruit back into your diet, sherbet is a good addition.
Step 2
Choose a sherbet that is made with all natural ingredients. A good sherbet that is a healthy choice for someone on the South Beach Diet will be made with little more than fruit and milk. Those that list corn syrup, artificial flavorings and preservatives as ingredients will not be conducive to the South Beach Diet philosophy.
Step 3
Look at the ingredients and sugar content of different flavors of sherbet while at the grocery store. The carbohydrate and sugar content will be listed as part of the Nutritional Facts. If made with fruit and natural ingredients, the sherbet will have a small or moderate amount of carbs and sugar in it. If made with artificial ingredients and sugar, expect to see a high carb count.
Step 4
Add fruit to plain or vanilla low fat and sugar free sherbet to give it extra flavor and texture. A plain sherbet will have less carbs than a fruited or flavored sherbet, and adding your own fruit gives you control over the content and makes it a healthier, fresher treat.
Step 5
Try sherbet flavored fat-free candy if you're craving something sweet, but don't want any extra carbs or fat. This can be a good way to take the edge off of your craving for sherbet without actually giving in to it. You can enjoy sherbet candy in a variety of flavors so that it doesn't feel like you're restricting yourself.
