What Foods Are Bad for Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux is a gastrointestinal condition that causes stomach acid to become regurgitated into the esophagus, leading to bloating and a burning sensation in the chest known as heart burn. Fortunately, there are many diet changes a person with acid reflux can make that can ease the symptoms and help prevent episodes of acid reflux. To prevent the onset of acid reflux and subsequent heart burn, it is recommended to avoid certain foods.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus-based fruits like lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit and pineapples can trigger an acid reflux episode. Many people eliminate citrus fruits, as well as citrus-based sauces and juices, from their diet to prevent acid reflux episodes.

Spicy Foods

Foods that are spicy, such as Mexican cuisine, often cause acid reflux episodes in patients. Patients are advised to avoid foods that contain spicy peppers, chilies, condiments or raw onions, which causes indigestion and heartburn.

Fried Foods

Greasy or fatty foods lead to indigestion in patients and produce gases in the gastrointestinal tract, often causing heart burn and acid reflux. Doctors recommend patients avoid fried foods from their diets, as well as monitor their fat intake.
