Controlling your cholesterol level can sometimes be akin waging a war. Cholesterol levels seem to be out of control in some people, and physicians will occasionally prescribe medications to help lower them. However, foods such as vegetables, fruits and oats can help lower those high cholesterol levels. Most of these foods contain something called soluble fiber which can be used in different ways to help reduce overall cholesterol levels.
Oats
Oatmeal is an excellent way to help reduce cholesterol levels. The Mayo Clinic reports that oatmeal contains soluble fiber which reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. Eating Cheerios is another way to get a solid amount of oats and soluble fiber into your diet. According to Harvard Health Publications, Cheerios can add about 1 to 2g of soluble fiber to your diet. Oat bran that is used to make many other breakfast cereals can also help to lower cholesterol.
Vegetables
Vegetables are an excellent way to help lower the body's cholesterol level. The soluble fiber attaches to the fatty acids in the bloodstream to reduce cholesterol levels. According to Harvard Health Publications, these beneficial vegetables include okra and eggplant. Carrots and peas can also be an excellent source of soluble fiber. Simply adding a few of these vegetables to your diet can be very helpful in controlling your cholesterol. However, keep in mind that deep frying these foods is unacceptable. Instead, try eating raw or steamed vegetables. Also, add herbs and spices to your veggies to help with the taste instead of adding salt.
Fruits
Several different fruits can help you lower your cholesterol level. According to The Harvard Health Publications, many fruits contain a beneficial soluble fiber called pectin that lowers the cholesterol. Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, tangerines and tangelos can be a tasty way of lowering cholesterol levels. Apples, grapes and strawberries are also good sources of fruits that can lower your cholesterol.
