Your lacrosse stick is the most important piece of equipment in the sport, and it needs to perfectly suit your size, ability and position for it to be effective. Before you decide which types of modifications you want to make in order to customize your LAX stick, research to see what similar-sized players your age have done. You can customize the shaft's composition and grip, the stringing for the head or the color scheme. You can also alter the length of the shaft.
Step 1
Restring the LAX stick head to make it looser or tighter. A tighter stringing enables you to toss harder, though it makes it more difficult to receive passes; a looser stringing makes it easier to receive but harder to shoot. According to Lax.com, stretch the mesh that makes up the pocket, then secure the mesh to the top of the frame using lacrosse string and needlenose pliers. Cut the string, then burn the ends to prevent fraying. Secure the mesh to the sidewalls with the string, then do the same for the bottom. Interlace string through the mesh as desired.
Step 2
Cut the shaft with a saw to shorten it. Purchase a LAX stick that is too long, then customize it by making it shorter.
Step 3
Paint the shaft and frame of the LAX stick with the paint color of you choice. Sand off the original paint and then add your own coat.
Step 4
Wrap tape around the shaft on the spots where your hands are most often placed. According to professional lacrosse player Matt Danowski, wrap the tape near the head on the spot where you usually hold with one hand. Up near the butt of the shaft, place the tape in the spots where each respective hand usually goes.
Step 5
Build up a bulk of tape at the end of the stick, called the butt, so that your hands do not slide off the end. Wrap tape as many times around as you feel necessary.
Tips and Warnings
- Use lacrosse-specific string if you restring the head.
- Do not put fire on the end of cut strings for too long or the string itself will melt. Wear protective goggles when cutting the shaft with a saw.
