How to Choose Weight Sets

Many avid weight lifters prefer to have some lifting equipment in their home for personal use at any time of day. This can be less expensive over the long run than a gym membership and makes it easier for some people to work out consistently. Sometimes you can find weight sets for low prices at garage sales or online, but many times individuals want a weight set they can be confident will last.

Step 1

Decide what muscle groups you will want to work most. The most common type of lifting equipment is a standard weight bench that allows you to do the bench and incline press. If you want a weight set that can accommodate other areas of exercise, you can often add extra features to a weight bench to work out your leg muscles and incorporate other types of lifts.

Step 2

Choose Olympic-sized weights, which feature a two-inch diameter hole, and an Olympic bar, which is seven feet long. If you go out to purchase accessories, such as additional weights or bar clamps, it is easy to find accessories that fit Olympic weight sets because it is the most common type of weight set sold.

Step 3

Decide what type of plates you want. The three typical options are metal, metal encased in rubber and solid rubber. Unless you have a padded floor for working out, you should avoid metal plates, which are more likely to cause damage to the floor. Solid rubber plates are thicker because the rubber is less dense, so they will take up more space.

Step 4

Choose what kind of dumbbells you want. You can purchase dumbbells forged into pre-set weights, but when you get stronger you'll have to buy new weights. Instead, buy Olympic dumbbells with adjustable weights.
