If you are riding long distances, you want a bicycle seat that provides support and comfort to your sit bones. The comfort level depends on your shape and size. To determine if you have the best seat for riding, visit a local bike shop and try out the saddles before you make your final purchase.

Types

A comfortable long-distance saddle for women will be a type designed to fit a woman's figure. Bike seats for women have wider rear sections to accommodate a woman's larger pelvis. The bike saddle should also have a shorter nose to suit a woman's anatomy. You do not need a bike saddle with cutout portions. These are more suitable for men.

Fit

The fit of the bike seat is important to your comfort level on distance rides. When you test a bicycle seat, get into your normal riding position. Your sit bones, the pressure points on your behind, should rest squarely in the center of the seat. If the seat is too wide, you'll experience chafing during distance rides. When the seat is too narrow, you'll feel more pressure on the buttocks.

Materials

You should not use a gel seat for distance riding. Gel seats are more appropriate for short rides on off-road terrain. Instead, choose a firm seat with minimal padding. Too much padding puts added pressure on the behind when you are riding long distances.

Considerations

If your bike saddle is not comfortable for long rides, try to adjust it before purchasing a new seat. For instance, if your saddle is too high, it can make riding long distances painful. Bikes with suspension seat posts also help relieve discomfort on rides.
