Gout is a painful, arthritic-like disease caused by uric acid crystal deposits in tissues and joints, especially the toes. The crystals are sharp and cause inflammatory reactions in surrounding connective tissue. Gout is caused by a diet high in purines, which includes meats, shellfish, mushrooms, wine and beer. Some natural remedies contain nutrients that are effective in reducing uric acid levels and relieving symptoms of gout.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice can prevent gout attacks or reduce symptoms by stimulating the formation of calcium carbonate in the body, according to "Biochemistry of Human Nutrition." Calcium carbonate neutralizes acids within the bloodstream and tissues, including the excess uric acid that triggers gout attacks. Lemon juice is also a rich source of vitamin C, which can minimize the damage done by the sharp uric acid crystals by strengthening the connective tissues surrounding joints. According to "Biochemical, Physiological and Molecular Aspects of Human Nutrition," the citric acid found in lemon juice also acts as a solvent for the crystals and dissolves them, which effectively lowers serum uric acid levels. Lemon juice is usually consumed shortly after a meal for best effects. Freshly squeezed lime, grapefruit and orange juice can also be effective; all are excellent sources of vitamin C.
Cherries
Fresh cherries and cherry juice are popular remedies for gout that have been used for generations. Sour cherries are usually preferred because they have a stronger alkalizing effect on the blood and tissues, which prevents uric acid from precipitating into crystals. Cherries, as well as some other berries, contain flavonoids, which help strengthen and protect collagen from the uric acid crystals. According to "Medical Herbalism," cherries also contain an enzyme that neutralizes uric acid and they're high in anthocyanins, which display strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The amount of cherries usually recommended is between half a dozen and two dozen daily. Cherry extract is recommended to be taken immediately after symptoms are experienced.
Devil's Claw
Devil's claw is an herbal anti-inflammatory that's used as a natural alternative by those with arthritis and gout. Devil's claw can also reduce levels of uric acid in the blood. A common recommended dosage of Devil's claw is 500mg to 750mg, three times daily, while suffering from the pain and inflammation of a gout attack, as cited in "The Complete Book of Chinese Medicine."
Alfalfa
Alfalfa is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals that can also reduce serum uric acid levels. Further, alfalfa produces a powerful alkalizing affect within the body, raising pH levels, which is an effective way of controlling gout. In general, the more alkaline in the body, the more uric acid stays dissolved in the blood and other fluids. This is why taking magnesium supplements and drinking water with baking soda can also reduce symptoms of gout.
