Wild Oats Performance Crunch, a cereal made with a blend of grains, has no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Low in sodium and high in fiber, this cereal contains no refined sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, but does contain a substantial number of calories per serving.
Calories and Fat
Wild Oats Performance Cereal contains about 230 calories per 1-cup serving. About 30 of these calories come from fat, approximately 3 g. Sources of fat include expeller-pressed canola oil, which is very low in saturated fat and has a high proportion of monounsaturated, or "healthy," fat. Although typical sugar-sweetened cereals provide far fewer calories and fat grams per serving, they also have less in the way of nutritional benefits overall, including less fiber and protein and higher sodium. Wild Oats Performance Cereal contains about the same number of calories per serving as a typical granola cereal.
Carbohydrates
The total carbohydrates in Wild Oats Performance Cereal equals 39 g per 1-cup serving. About 20 g of these carbohydrates come from the sugar in evaporated cane juice, not refined white sugar. Evaporated cane juice, a term approved by the Food and Drug Administration, undergoes slightly less processing than refined white sugar, allowing it to retain a few more nutrients. In addition, some of the carbohydrates come from fiber. Wild Oats Performance Cereal contains 8 g of fiber per 1-cup serving, about 33 percent of the total recommended daily intake of fiber for the average adult.
Sodium
Wild Oats Performance Cereal contains very little sodium per serving, about 20 mg. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans as well as the Institute of Medicine and the American Heart Association recommend that healthy adults limit sodium intake to between 1,500 mg and 2,300 mg a day. A 1-cup serving of this cereal, unlike most processed breakfast cereals, contains less than 1 percent of the upper limit of this recommended amount. High-sodium diets increase your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke as well as osteoporosis.
Protein
Wild Oats Performance Cereal contains about 9 g of protein per 1-cup serving, or about 18 percent of your daily recommended amount. When choosing protein sources, you should pay attention to what comes along with the protein. Whole grains and soy protein, such as those found in Wild Oats Performance Cereal, are excellent choices, according to the Harvard School of Public Health, along with beans and nuts, as they provide fiber, vitamins and minerals without much fat.
