Your body cells function properly when your blood pH is balanced between alkaline and acidic. Your body regulates its pH by adjusting your lung, kidney and other physiological processes, notes Patrick Holford in "The Optimum Nutrition Bible." Including more alkaline-forming foods in your daily diet can naturally balance your pH and promote healthy body functions.
Vegetables
Most alkalizing foods are unprocessed and naturally grown from the earth. Therefore all vegetables are alkalizing foods. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, celery, cauliflower, carrots, pumpkins, onions, mushrooms, lettuce, onions cucumbers and peas are all alkalizing sources. Some less common alkalizing vegetables are kale, chard, dandelions, barley grass, rutabagas and other edible flowers, notes the author of "Digestive Wellness."
Fruits
With the exception of cranberries, all fruits are alkalizing and contain bountiful amounts of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Examples of popular alkaline fruits include bananas, avocados, limes, lemons, cherries, grapes, apples, pineapples, tangerines, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and tomatoes. Although limes and lemons are thought to be acidic, they become alkaline during digestion. Your digestive enzymes provides an alkaline state for digestion. Therefore they are considered to alkaline fruits, reports "Digestive Wellness."
Protein-Based Food
Most protein derived from animal flesh contains acidic properties. Sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, chestnuts, almonds, walnuts, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts and other sprouted seeds and nuts are alkalizing protein sources. Although butter, cheese and milk are acidic, yogurt, kefir, eggs and tofu are considered alkalizing foods, according to "The Optimum Nutrition Bible."
Beverages
With the exception of adding milk or sugar, many tea types are alkaline forming, notes "The Optimum Nutrition Bible." Examples of alkalizing teas include ginseng, green, dandelion and most herbal teas. Freshly made vegetable juices and fruit juices are also alkaline-based foods. Milk that is unpasteurized and organic is considered to be alkaline.
