Ipecac syrup, an emetic, causes you to vomit because of its irritating effect on your stomach and its ability to trigger you to vomit. Ipecac is typically used to induce vomiting because of the possible ingestion of non-caustic poisons. You need to follow this medication with two glasses of water. If vomiting does not occur within a half-hour, repeat the dose. If you still have no results, call your doctor for further instructions. Side effects may happen when you take this medication.
Stomach Cramps
Stomach cramps may occur when using ipecac because of its stimulating effect on the digestive system. Stomach cramps may cause you some pain. After you vomit, a heating pad placed upon your stomach may help relax your stomach and intestines. The intestines may tighten up because the medicine irritates the lining of your bowels and causes cramping in your stomach.
Diarrhea
You may need to use the bathroom many times because of ipecac. Your stools will have a watery consistency. Diarrhea also may produce cramping in your abdominal area. You may experience this for at least a couple of days after taking this medicine. You will need to rest to relax your intestines and stomach. If diarrhea becomes too uncomfortable, you may use over-the-counter medications to help stop it. If the diarrhea feels severe to you, or if it continues, speak with a physician about it. Some other health problem may exist.
Drowsiness
Electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium and sodium are lost when you vomit. This loss will cause you to feel tired and need some rest. Drinking ginger ale and sports drinks will help replace your electrolytes. You will need to sip your fluids to help your stomach and intestines stay relaxed. The physical act of vomiting itself may make you feel weak and tired for some time afterward.
Trouble Breathing
Trouble breathing is a serious side effect of ipecac and you will need immediate medical attention if it occurs. You will need to call your doctor for an evaluation and possible treatment, or if it feels severe, get to your local emergency room for help.
