Golf carts can be used in areas other than a golf course -- such as on hotel grounds or other large-area businesses -- as a form of low-speed transportation. You can also purchase a golf cart for home use as long as you have the proper documentation to support your purchase. Of this documentation, you need to make sure you have a title for the golf cart, especially if you want to sell the cart in the future.
Step 1
Contact your local DMV office to decipher your city's registration requirements. While many states require you to license and/or register your golf cart, other states do not. For example, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles ceased offering this service as of September 1, 2009, with the exception of one county where citizens are able to purchase golf cart license plates. In Nevada, however, golf cart registration is handled on a town-by-town basis, and is governed by individual municipalities.
Step 2
Bring your receipt of purchase for the cart and appropriate payment with you to the DMV office. Payment options include check, cash or money order for some departments.
Step 3
Provide your local DMV with the appropriate payment and proof-of-purchase documentation. Obtain your title either directly from the office or via mail.
