Self-promotion is essential for entrepreneurs such as yoga teachers. Even if you teach with an established studio, it is up to you to get students into your particular class. Promoting yourself takes self-esteem and a belief in what you are selling, which is your ability to teach and help your students through the practice of yoga. You must believe in yourself and your product in order to come off as genuine, and something worth people's time and money. With the right tools, you can successfully promote yourself and your classes.
Step 1
Design a website or hire someone to create it for you. A website provides a central place for people to go to find out about you, your education, philosophy, yoga discipline, class schedule and personality. The site should be designed so that it is aesthetically pleasing, however, keeping it simple with clean lines and images will help to establish you as a professional. Include photos of yourself, preferably in yoga poses, and if possible, post photos of your classes so that new students can get an idea of what they will be walking into. It is also a good idea to have an email link so that students are able to ask you any questions.
Step 2
Create a flyer or postcard. These are very efficient tools that are commonly used within the yoga community. Postcards are especially helpful due to their size and durable material. The aesthetic theme of the postcard should match your website in order to create a consistent message and promotional identity. Have flyers available to hand out during your classes and at the front desk of the studio where you teach. You can also leave flyers at café's and coffee shops around your town, and possibly even at the front desk of local chiropractors, acupuncturists and massage therapists. You can even include a special promo offer, such as a one-time free or discounted class, with the postcard.
Step 3
Employ the use of social networking tools, such as Facebook and Twitter. This has become one of the most efficient methods of self-promotion, as you are able to reach a large number of like-minded people in a small amount of time. Interact with your friends and followers by answering questions, offering tips, posting yoga philosophy and yoga related photos.
Step 4
Partner with a chiropractor, acupuncturist or massage therapist and develop a package that you can cross-promote together. For example, offer a special price for a package of three yoga classes and three acupuncture sessions; you and the acupuncturist can possibly even consult with each other on each client in order to further address their particular issues and needs.
Step 5
Organize a reduced-priced introduction workshop for new students in order to go over the basics of yoga, including the beginner poses, so that they feel comfortable attending regular classes; many people who are new to yoga are intimidated and often feel too timid to try classes. A workshop such as this can draw new students in while also creating a comforting bond with them right from the start.
Step 6
Buy advertising in local holistic newspapers and publications, if there is one in the city where you live. This will allow you to reach those who probably are already practicing and enjoying yoga, but may be looking for a new class, studio or instructor.
