Bronchitis is a common lung-related condition. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that bronchitis develops when air passages in your lungs become inflamed. There are two types of bronchitis: acute and chronic. Acute and chronic bronchitis are usually caused by different factors, although both cause coughing and wheezing. Herbal medications for bronchitis attempt to reduce inflammation in your airways. Discuss the risks and benefits of herbal medication with your doctor before using this treatment method.
Bronchitis Information
Acute bronchitis is often caused by bacterial, viral, chlamydial or mycoplasmal infection. Acute bronchitis frequently follows an upper respiratory tract infection such as a cold or flu. Most cases of acute bronchitis self-resolve after several weeks, although this condition can lead to pneumonia. Chronic bronchitis develops following prolonged irritation of your lung tissue. Exposure to cigarette smoke, environmental pollutants and other noxious fumes are the most common causes of chronic bronchitis, although infection may also cause this condition.
Common Herbal Medication
Bronchitis is a condition that often responds to herbal medication. According to master herbalist Ed Smith, author of "Therapeutic Herb Manual," herbs that have been used to treat bronchitis include boneset, calamus, coltsfoot, elder, elecampane, eyebright, grindelia, horehound, khella, licorice, marshmallow, myrrh, butterbur and red root. Other possibly helpful ones include American ginseng, olive oil extract and expectorant herbs such as hyssop and mullein. Herbal medication for bronchitis can help clear your bronchial passages and reduce inflammation in your lungs.
An Effective Herb
Hyssop is one of the most effective herbs in treating bronchitis. The University of Michigan Health System states that hyssop has traditionally been used by herbalists to treat chest congestion and coughs, soothe sore throats and serve as a mild sedative. Hyssop encourages the expulsion of mucus from your respiratory tract, helps regulate your blood pressure and dispels intestinal gas. The flowers, leaves and shoots of this plant have been used to treat bronchitis, circulatory problems, epilepsy, fever and gout.
Considerations
There are several home treatments that may be beneficial in treating your bronchitis. Consider applying warm, moist heat or a hot water bottle over your chest and back before going to sleep to help to reduce inflammation and improve your sleep quality. Eucalyptus oil can also be rubbed on your chest to help decrease congestion. Exercise is an important treatment for bronchitis, as it helps you breathe more efficiently and allows you to better tolerate your activities of daily living.
