Football players must possess a variety of skills to be successful in the game. Catching a bullet throw from the quarterback is one of those skills that receivers need to develop with practice and determination. Building fundamentals is key to catching the proper way. Having a sound grip and stance enhances the chances of that catch being made every time, leading to increased playing time and player satisfaction, and ultimately, more wins for the team.

Catching a Bullet Throw in Football

Step 1

Run your route precisely. Your quarterback is counting on you to be in the right spot at the right time. If your communication is off, the chances of catching a bullet throw are slim.

Step 2

Look for the ball. Sometimes, bullet throws come off breaks and sometimes quarterbacks lead you to a spot. Other times, the quarterback will rifle the ball right at you. You want to find the ball as soon as you can.

Step 3

Form a triangle with your hands and give the quarterback a big target. Providing a target is visually appealing, and if the quarterback has time, he will throw the ball to the target.

Step 4

Adjust to the flight of the ball. You have seen the ball and given a proper target. That doesn't guarantee that the throw will be accurate. With the ball about halfway to you, adjust your hands to the flight of the ball.

Step 5

Use your body to shield off defenders. Body position is important in football receiving, and you want to make sure you aren't giving the defensive back the inside track to the football.

Step 6

Plant your feet into the ground, and give yourself a stable base. Unless the quarterback is hitting you with a bullet pass in stride, odds are you will want to establish yourself and focus on reeling the ball in.

Step 7

Catch the ball with your hands, not your chest or body. A bullet pass comes at high velocity, and trying to catch it with your chest or body will likely result in the ball deflecting off your shoulder pads and falling incomplete.

Step 8

Reel the ball into your chest once it is securely in your hands. Complete the process of making the catch, then turn and run upfield if you haven't been tackled.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some receivers prefer gloves, especially for bullet passes, to remove some of the sting and increase grip.
