Quad roller skates are typical roller skates that have four wheels. Two wheels are attached to either side of a truck and axle assembly. One truck is positioned under the toe of the skate and the other under the heel, providing a very stable configuration to stand and skate. Each skate typically has a rubber stop at the front that serves as a brake. Quad skating is relatively simple to learn, with a little practice, balance and nerve.
Standing
Step 1
Choose a carpeted area to start practicing standing in your quad skates. Put on your skates, helmet and other protective gear.
Step 2
Begin on your hands and knees. Lift one knee up to place the quad skate under you, positioning all four wheels on the carpet. Stand up a little on that leg and bring the other leg up under you in the same manner. Stand up slowly, maintaining your balance as you go. Extend your arms out to your sides to help balance.
Step 3
Take a step with one leg, balancing as you move. Plant your quad skate firmly on the carpet with all four wheels making contact at the same time. Don't attempt to skate yet. Walk around on your skates to build confidence in your ability to stand in your quad skates.
Gliding
Step 1
Move to a smooth and level indoor surface that is clear of people or obstacles. Repeat the steps for standing and walking to get comfortable on this new surface.
Step 2
Place the toe of one quad skate facing forward and the other skate facing outward at an angle. Bend your knees a little and push backward gently with the leg with the outward facing skate.
Step 3
Glide forward slightly on the other quad skate. Bring the skate you pushed with forward and next to the other skate and continue to glide until you stop. Repeat this step until you are comfortable with pushing and gliding. Change feet and practice on the other side.
Step 4
Alternate pushing and gliding from one side to the other. Practice making the transition from gliding to pushing from side to side smooth and fluid.
Braking
Step 1
Place your feet side by side about two to four inches apart while gliding at a slow rate. Bend your knees slightly. Extend your arms out to the sides to balance.
Step 2
Bear your weight on the quad skate on your strongest leg. Lift your other foot up and back while balancing on one skate.
Step 3
Drop the toe of the lifted quad skate slowly onto the surface behind you and drag the toe stop. This action will slow you down to a stop.
Step 4
Reposition your braking foot under you to help you stand still. Practice gliding, then braking at a slow speed first, working up to faster speeds.
