Smart Shopping for Maternity Bras

There are four main styles of maternity bra. Which one you choose will depend on your personal comfort and your needs at different stages while you are nursing. These days, maternity bras have modern designs and are lightweight and comfortable. Each style allows you a different means of access.

One style unhooks as the front, as do some regular bras. Though this type of maternity bra is easy to open, you may want a style that is more discreet, in which case you may prefer a maternity bra that has zips below the cups. This style is both discreet and allows you to alternate between cups. Another style has straps which are connected to the cup by a small hook or button which can be easily opened to allow access. This style can be tricky to refasten if the strap slips off your shoulder.

If you want a maternity bra that is comfortable for nighttime feeding, there is a specially designed nighttime bra. The material is more lightweight than daytime bras, and the design is a simple crossover so that you can pull back the cup quite comfortably.

What to Look for

Bear in mind that your breast size will increase so you may need to buy different size bras for different times during pregnancy and nursing. Also remember that you will need several nursing bras so you can wash them frequently when you have leaks. Consider where you will be when you are breastfeeding, how active you will be and how often you will be breastfeeding. These are all important factors in helping you choose the right bra.

Look for maternity bras made from cotton. They are more comfortable and will help to keep your nipple cool and dry and so will prevent soreness and infections. Your breasts are going to get heavier, so you will need a maternity bra that can give you the best support to avoid straining your back and shoulders. For maximum support, choose bras with broad and comfortable straps, wide support bands at the sides and beneath your breasts.

Look for bras that have a cup size adjuster. These are great for times when your breast size is fluctuating during nursing. Adjustable cup maternity bras are not available in the center opening style.

Common Pitfalls

Some maternity bras with zips and seams can be seen through your clothes. Try out different styles, as some may be difficult to open and can be frustrating for both mother and baby.
