Testosterone replacement therapy is the supplementation of natural or synthetic testosterone in men who have become deficient in the hormone, which often occurs because of aging. Though there is some debate over safety issues, for the most part, this therapy has become an accepted form of re-establishing proper sexual function. Certain nutritional supplements can not only be taken to naturally increase testosterone, but they can also work well as a supplement to TRT.
Vitamin C
One supplement that may help testosterone replacement therapy is vitamin C. In the book, "Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide," author Larry Trivieri notes that nutritional medicine can help men cope with the natural decline of testosterone. He references alternative health expert W. Lee Cowden, M.D., who recommends taking 2000 to 3000mg of vitamin C a day to improve testosterone function. This can be taken alongside TRT, and may diminish the need for high levels of this therapy.
Zinc
Zinc is another important nutrient to either increase low levels of testosterone or to use as supplement while on TRT. Jonny Bowden in his book, "The 150 Most Effective Ways to Boost Your Energy," notes that zinc is necessary for the metabolism of testosterone. Therefore, you should get at least the recommended 18mg of zinc in your diet, but do not surpass 50mg per day.
ZMA
Another possible supplement that may help testosterone replacement therapy is called ZMA. This supplement combines zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6, and according to Ed Burke, author of "Optimal Muscle Performance and Recovery," it has been found to boost testosterone levels naturally. He notes that research has determined that nightly supplementation with ZMA increases free testosterone by more than 30%. If currently taking TRT, use this product cautiously, as you may increase levels to a dangerous range. Start slowly and monitor levels with a doctor.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12, an important vitamin for many body functions ranging from nerve health to immune function, may also help when it comes to TRT. In the book, "The Natural Testosterone Plan: For Sexual Health and Energy," Stephen Harrod Buhner notes that studies have shown significant increases in sperm count and motility when men were given from 1000 to 6000mg of vitamin B12 daily.
