In their book, "The Confident Coach's Guide to Teaching Lacrosse," authors Daniel and Michael Morris state that "lacrosse sticks are the most closely regulated equipment in the game." This means that you must follow strict guidelines when lacing your own lacrosse head so that you meet these strict requirements, as well as maximize your playing capacity on the field.
Step 1
Dip the mesh into a basin of hot water and allow it to soak for a few hours to soften it. Stretch the mesh after it has soaked to improve its workability. Bend the top row of mesh diamonds in half and then set it along the top of the lacrosse head.
Step 2
Wrap one end of the top string into a loop and pass the open end through the loop to form an overhand knot. Cinch the knot and pass the other end of the string through the top sidewall hole so the knot catches.
Step 3
Pass the open end of the top string through the first available mesh hole. Loop the string and push the open end into the first hole in the upper head wall. Bring the open end back through the first mesh hole and then the center of the string loop. Pull on the string to tighten the loop.
Step 4
Push the open end of the string through the next lacrosse head hole in the top wall, approaching from the inside of the pocket. Loop the string again and bring the string up through the third mesh diamond in the top row. Thread the string through the center of the loop and tighten it. Continue the looping method across the top row, skipping every other mesh hole. Tie off the string with an overhand knot when you finish the top row.
Step 5
Push a sidewall string with an overhand knot in one end through the first hole below the top string. Feed the string through the closest hole in the mesh and make a loop as you bring the string back through the next lowest hole in the sidewall. Bring the string through the next mesh diamond in the column and through the center of the loop. Tighten the loop to secure the mesh to the sidewall.
Step 6
Tie both sidewalls using the same looping method, but stop at the second to last hole in the lacrosse head. For the last hole on each sidewall, bring the string around the back of the pocket, through the final mesh diamond and out the bottom hole. Close off the string with an overhand knot about 3/4 inch from the sidewall so there is slack in the line.
Step 7
Feed the bottom string up through the hole on the left side of the head base closest to the shaft, and then down through the hole next to it. Fold the bottom string toward the back side of the pocket and insert it into the first mesh diamond in the bottom row. Bring the string up through the next diamond in the row. Weave it across the bottom row until all of the diamonds are secured in place.
Step 8
Thread the bottom string through the two remaining holes in the lacrosse head bottom and tie it off with a knot. Finish lacing the lacrosse head by tying your shooting strings into place. Try different patterns to increase your ball handling or shooting speed according to your needs as a player.
