A key component in losing weight is controlling your appetite and preventing overeating. Fortunately, there are a variety of readily available supplements that can suppress your appetite, while also stimulating the metabolism to allow you to burn more calories.
Many of these supplements and drugs are stimulant-based and should not be used by anyone with a preexisting heart condition. Consult a doctor to determine if these are right for you.
Caffeine
Self medicating with caffeine is hardly a recent phenomenon. Utilized for centuries for its stimulant properties, caffeine blunts the appetite while increasing heart rate and metabolic function, and improving concentration and energy.
Caffeine can be found in a variety of natural sources such as tea and coffee, and it's readily available in pill form for easy consumption. Caffeine is ideally consumed on an empty stomach to maximize the effects. Take up to 200 mg upon waking and again in the afternoon to suppress appetite and increase energy. According to recent studies on exercise performance, benefits of caffeine consumption are most noticeable in doses of 2-3 mg per kg of body weight. Consult a physician for more information.
Ephedrine
Ephedrine is a powerful stimulant that has been studied for its synergistic effects when consumed with caffeine. Its ability to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system dramatically increases the body's metabolic rate while reducing appetite. Ephedrine is often consumed alongside caffeine and aspirin, as this forces the body to free up sources of stored body fat for energy, allowing for rapid weight loss.
Ephedrine is no longer marketed as a weight loss aid in the United States, but it is readily available for medicinal purposes and as a standalone ingredient. Consume up to 25 mg of ephedrine, either by itself or with 200 mg caffeine and 80 mg aspirin for an effective stack. A study conducted by Harvard University displays the peak effectiveness of ephedrine to be limited at doses over 30 mg per serving. Consult a physician before adding ephedrine to your regimen.
Yohimbine
Yohimbine is an extract of the plant-based alkaloid yohimbe, a common herbal dietary supplement recommended for both weight loss and sexual stimulation. Yohimbine hydrochloride is a purified form of the yohimbe bark that contains many stimulant effects such as appetite suppression, heightened metabolic rate and increased heart rate. Another practical usage of yohimbine is its ability to stimulate sexual desire, or libido, and to counteract many aspects of erectile dysfunction. In addition, yohimbine has been researched to allow the body to target stored adipose tissue, or fat cells, to be released as energy.
Yohimbine HCL typically comes in pills of 2.5 mg each. Precise dose should be determined based on bodyweight, and it can consumed in up to three doses per day. Assess a tolerance slowly, as an excess of yohimbine can cause temporary anxiety. Consult a physician for more information.
Geranamine
Geranamine, or 1,3 Dimethylamylamine, is a derivative of geranium oil, notable for its strong stimulant and thermogenic properties. Synthetically known as Methylhexaneamine, geranamine is similar to other stimulants and is marked by a strong appetite suppression, as well as a raise in body temperature and energy usage. According to Bodybuilding.com, Geranamine functions by mimicking the body's chemical messenger epinephrine to produce adrenaline. This works as a pwoerful stimulant of the central nervous system to improve energy and focus and blunt appetitie. (See Reference 5).
Due to the sensations of energy and power it provides, geranamine is contained in many weight loss and pre-workout supplements, though it is also available as a standalone ingredient as pills or a powder. Geranamine should be consumed on an empty stomach in a single dose of 25 to 50 mg. Consult a physician before taking this supplement.
