What Can You Eat With Nutrisystem?

Nutrisystem is a diet delivery program designed to help you lose 1 to 2 lbs. per week by using portion-controlled meals and snacks to reduce your calories. The program may be worth considering if you are looking for a diet that does not require you to cook gourmet meals or count your calories, but before getting started, you should find out what foods you can eat on the diet. Get your doctor's approval before starting any diet for weight loss.

Diet Overview

All Nutrisystem plans are available for men or women, and plan options include Basic, or regular, Silver for adults older than 65 and Nutrisystem D for individuals with diabetes. Nutrisystem meal plans do not exclude food groups, and they emphasize low-glycemic carbohydrates and frequent meals and snacks to help you control your hunger and blood sugar levels. On the plan, you eat three Nutrisystem meals and one snack or dessert as well as additional grocery foods.

Nutrisystem Meals

A day on Nutrisystem includes a Nutrisystem breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack, and you receive a weekly delivery of your food for the week. When you order your foods, you can order the default suggested menu or select your meals and snacks individually from among more than 150 Nutrisystem options or more than 80 vegetarian choices. A day on Nutrisystem could include a peanut butter granola bar for breakfast, roasted vegetable pizza for lunch, shrimp Alfredo for dinner and carrot cake for dessert.

Groceries

Your daily Nutrisystem meal plan includes grocery foods that you purchase for yourself. Low-fat dairy products and dairy alternatives such as yogurt, milk and soy milk provide calcium, and you get extra protein from sources such as tofu, chicken and tuna. Fruits and vegetables on your plan may include apples, carrots, broccoli and plums, and you can eat as much as you want of certain vegetables such as zucchini. Your grocery additions may include almonds or peanut butter for healthy fats, and low-glycemic carbohydrates such as beans and multigrain bread.

Considerations

When you purchase your Nutrisystem plan, you get specific instructions about what grocery foods to eat and what the serving sizes are. If you find that you do not like certain suggested foods that are on your plan, you can ask a Nutrisystem counselor to help you find an alternative choice. For more freedom with the foods you eat on Nutrisystem, you can purchase a plan that includes five days per week of Nutrisystem foods and two days when you supply your own food.
