1. Reverse Mother Nature With a Face Lift
As you age, skin and soft tissue gradually lose elasticity. You know this phenomenon as wrinkles. You may begin to notice you look tired when you're not. Deep lines and creases form on the forehead and around the mouth. Fine lines appear at the corners of the eyes. The neck begins to drop like a turkey's. All this is the wonderful thing we call aging. Some say age gracefully. Others thumb their nose at Mother Nature and turn to cosmetic surgery to make them look and feel better.
2. Choose the Right Kind of Facelift
Facelifts are no longer a one package fits all type of cosmetic surgery. Patients should discuss their options with their plastic surgeon to see which type of facelift it for them. Patients can select a full lift or target specific problem areas with a browlift, necklift or facial liposuction. A weekend facelift is ideal for patients short on time. It is minimally invasive and the recovery time is short. Of course, the results aren't as dramatic as a full facelift.
3. Get Real About Having a Facelift
A facelift will not make you look the way you did in your teens or twenties. It will not radically alter your appearance. What it will do is make you look refreshed and more vibrant. A facelift removes extra skin and fat and softens wrinkles and deep lines. It can enhance your lower jaw by getting rid of sagging jowls. All of this will make you look better, not different.
4. Facelifts Aren't Risk Free
Cosmetic surgery comes with all the same risks as regular surgery. Your plastic surgeon should go over your medical health history to make sure you are a good candidate for a facelift. You should be in generally good health with no chronic medical conditions, such as problems with your heart, lungs or liver. As with any surgery, a facelift comes with a risk of complications, such as infection. So weigh your options carefully before committing to the surgery.
5. You Foot the Bill for a Facelift
Because cosmetic surgery like a facelift is elective surgery, most insurance will not cover it. A minor procedure, like a browlift or necklift, may cost only a few thousand dollars while a full facelift costs significantly more, depending on your plastic surgeon. And remember, you will still continue to age after your facelift. Your results may last anywhere between five and ten years.
