Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD, is characterized by difficulty focusing, impulsive behavior and even low self-esteem. Conventional medical treatment includes counseling and prescription medication. Essential oils and aromatherapy are natural methods that can be used in conjunction with traditional medical care. As more and more people are turning to alternative treatments, especially for children, scientists have begun to study the efficacy of therapies such as essential oils.

Lavender

Lavender is a fragrant, flowering herb grown throughout the world and prized for its calming and soothing effects. Lavender essential oil is used in aromatherapy and by herbalists to treat insomnia, anxiety and stress. In a study published in the "International Journal of Neuroscience" in 2003, lavender essential oil was compared to rosemary for its effects on both cognition and mood. While the results of that study favored rosemary, the University of Maryland Medical Center cites scientific studies that suggest lavender is effective at promoting relaxation. Researchers found that in addition to its calming effects, lavender may help improve concentration, reduce anxiety and stabilize mood.

Vetiver

Vetiver is a little-known herb native to India. It is a type of grass and has a fragrance similar to lemongrass and citronella. Like lemongrass, it is also used for its calming effects on the mind. In a 2001 study by Dr. Terry Friedmann, vetiver essential oil was compared to three other oils in the treatment of ADHD. Dr. Friedman discovered that vetiver helps improve ADHD symptoms and improve brain activity. His results were measured by EEG and subjective responses. In addition, parents of the test subjects later reported improvement in school performance and behavior. He recommended that cedarwood essential oil could be used if vetiver was not available.

Rosemary

Rosemary is a fragrant herb used in both cooking and herbal medicine. Historically, it was used in cosmetic and religious ceremonies. Some cultures believed it helped ward off evil spirits. Essential oil of rosemary is used in aromatherapy to alleviate pain, treat respiratory infections, soothe skin problems and improve mental clarity. In the 2003 study from the "International Journal of Neuroscience," it was also found to be more effective than lavender in improving both memory and attention. Rosemary essential oil should not be ingested, but inhaled or used in massage.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a versatile oil used both herbal medicine and aromatherapy. It is regarded as a natural sedative and analgesic. It is used by herbalists for colds, headaches, convulsions and spasms, as well as digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, gastritis and ulcers. In another study published in the "International Journal of Neuroscience" from 2008, researchers also found that peppermint oil may help to improve memory, focus and alertness.
